Dreadlocks reaching down to the floor, handwritten notes, no computer, and a clientele that comes to her facing police brutality and murder charges: at over 80 years old, Diane Jobson - Jamaica’s legendary "Rasta lawyer" - refuses to let anyone tell her what to do, least of all a documentary film crew. Director Amanda Sans Pantling adopts a similarly relaxed approach in following her daily routine: phone calls with clients, a swim with her dog, and sharing a joint with her best friend, Sally. Jobson rose to prominence in the 1970s as Bob Marley’s close friend and lawyer, converting to the Rastafari faith under his influence. After his death, she dedicated her life to fighting for Jamaica’s poorest, a commitment she maintains to this day. Eschewing dramatic theatrics, the film finds its power in the everyday, in the dry humor with which Jobson speaks about herself and the casual ease with which she embodies a life of radical self-determination. An inspiring portrait of a woman who never played by anyone else’s rules—and became an icon precisely because of it.
