Hello Mother

For a child who has never known her mother, the concept of a "complete family" often depends simply on the persistence of one's search. This is the path Khudizaya follows as she travels across the vast expanse of the Gobi with her loving, though alcohol-prone, father in hopes of finding her mother. At the journey's end, a broken woman awaits, along with a responsibility she feels ill-equipped to handle.

At the heart of »Hello Mother« lies the Mongolian ritual known as “Khuuslukh”, used to reunite stressed mother camels with the foals they have rejected. A musician plays a lute, bowed like a violin, and sings a ballad to soothe the camel and touch her maternal heart. It is a beautiful tradition and a ceremony of magical quality; around it, »Hello Mother« weaves a story that serves as a reminder not to lose sight of the values ​​of love and life amidst the whirlwind of modern civilization. With this debut film, Byambasuren Ganbat offers a glimpse into the emotional and cultural inner world of her country.
