Santiago has always dreamed of documenting the injustices in his home state of Veracruz, which has been torn apart by organized crime, as a photojournalist. However, barely after he starts his job at the newspaper in Xalapa, his once optimistic worldview begins to crumble. His mentor, Amanda, is murdered in her apartment, the investigation goes nowhere, and Santiago is met with a wall of silence. Despite urgent warnings, he makes Amanda's case public. In a city like Xalapa, this is a dangerous decision, and soon Santiago no longer knows whom he can trust.
Since the turn of the millennium, over 140 investigative journalists have died in Mexico, many of them in Xalapa, the secret capital of crime. Velasco tells a fictional story that may have happened, or something similar, many times before. A gripping and important thriller with subtle tones, where small details on the sidelines make the horror of the larger tragedy even more vivid.
