Tribute

On the surface, Mick Garris’ »Critters 2: The Main Course« (1988) follows the classic logic of almost every sequel. There are more Critters, more blood, and more spectacular action sequences. The fact that the small, furry monsters hatch from their eggs around Easter, however, reveals a rather biting sense of black humor. »Critters 2« is even more than its predecessor a satire on the “American way of life” disguised as an absurd sci-fi horror spectacle. It is no coincidence that the voracious furballs first target a fast-food restaurant and later a massive meat factory. In the insatiable hunger of the aliens, the greed of humans is reflected. Writers David Twohy and Mick Garris target the hypocrisy and complacency of American society just as the bounty hunters target the Critters. And in the end, it is the outsider played by Don Opper who saves those who have always mocked and humiliated him.
