Tribute

It all begins with a painfully beautiful moment of longing. The android Max 404 assembles a small figure with feminine curves from metal parts. Its male counterpart is already waiting. Max is waiting too. In the isolation of the space station, where he works as an assistant to Dr. Daniels, a “mad scientist” played by Klaus Kinski, he yearns for love and a life on Earth. When three fugitive criminals, including a woman, arrive on the space station, his dream seems within reach.

Aaron Lippstadt’s science fiction film »Android« (1982) is one of the most fascinating productions from Roger Corman’s studio »New World Pictures«. The genre-typical action and special effects sequences highlight Max’s quest for humanity. Don Opper’s sensitive performance gives this android an aura of childlike innocence. In doing so, he powerfully blurs the line between human and machine, paving the way for films like »Ex Machina« (2014).
