The middle of the night. Luz, a young cab driver, drags herself badly wounded into a run-down police station. It rains. At the same time, Nora sits in a bar and flirts with the police psychologist Dr. Rossini. They are all connected by something sinister from a long repressed past. A dark entity that will subsume and manipulate everything and anybody just to be with Luz, its lover. »Luz« cleverly plays with the audience’s perception and lets it question the reality of each moment again and again. Through a narration interlaced with flashbacks and the systematic use of additional layers of sound, it implies an uncertainty that makes it necessary to constantly reflect on what we’re told. Shot on 16mm, with a soundtrack that could have been written by John Carpenter and deliberately told in fragments, »Luz« is reminiscent of a classic Giallo-movie that Mario Bava would would have been proud of. Tilman Singer’s debut-thriller is a force; something brave and new in the genre-averse German film industry. A thriller that does without splatter elements or elaborate effects and still gets under your skin. Guaranteed.
