It’s a difficult task to introduce the work of cinema master such as Walerian Borowczyk, whose vast filmography dances across genres and dwells within the open spaces of charm, excitability and surrealist incongruity. However, Kuba Mikurda’s documentary delicatly captures the inner workings of this legendary Polish auteur Walerian Borowczyk, often labeled by critics as a genius that also happened to be a pornographer. The Disappearance of Walerian Borowczyk features interviews with his closest collaborators, filmmakers and leading intellectuals who put his work into perspective, including Terry Gilliam, Bertrand Bonello, Neil Jordan, Andrzej Wajda, Patrice Leconte, Slavoj Žižek. This unique artistic chronicle sheds light on his professional philosophy and artistic achievements and investigates how does one get from creating cuttingedge work and competing in Cannes to being labeled an erotic filmmaker?

Borowczyk’s art, which often looks like a carefully animated painting, and has the pessimistic urge one associates with Franz Kafka, is invariably about sex, love and death. But his eye is so sharp and his ironic sense of humour so audacious that even the worst of his films is worth something. The best inhabit a world you are unlikely to forget.
