Ivan is born into a difficult time. The nation is torn between corruption and sovereignty, repression and freedom, ideology and reason. Change is in the air. It’s still unassertive and unstable, but it’s noticeably coming. Ivan’s mother Mara is too naïve and blinded to realize it, his father Rok, a ruthless and corrupt businessman who is already married to someone else, too successful to accept it. Ivan is right in the middle, but helpless. Mara clings to Rok and wants to be with him, is obsessed. At the same time she is also tied to her son in the secret bond of motherhood. But both is not possible, cannot. Mara, as a representative of an entire nation, has birthed the upheaval under great pain, but is in love with the standstill. Ivan might be helpless, but it’s still about him, about the future and about the country. Mara, naïve and blind, has to make an important decision. A decision that no one can help her with. With »Ivan«, director Janez Burger has created a cinematic metaphor that is an angry love letter to his homeland Slovenia. Shooting Star Maruša Majer turns out to be perfectly cast for Mara, for the country and the tumultuous chaos of uncertainty.
