The Tatort from Berlin is archetypical for the series: The inspectors seem more like a dysfunctional couple but they still share a lot of respect and sympathy for each other. Grouped around them we find strong willed prosecutors, bumbling chief inspectors and funny side-kicks who usually tie the series to the region it takes place in. This formula gets millions in front of their television sets each Sunday and at the beginning of Schweinegeld we see the old familiar spiel. But then director Bodo Fürneisen breaks with the code and presents unusual aspects in this well worn drama. Ritter spends most of the time in hospital, where he charms the nurses and almost singlehandedly solves the crime from his sickbed, while Stark sees Weber rise to the occasion and step out of Ritter’s shadow at last only to be demoted to the role of loyal sidekick again and again. The story of a murder in the slaughterhouse and the illegal human trafficking takes several twists and uses a subtle montage and elegantly evoking camera-works to supplement the reduced dialogues.
