A naïve artist with delusions of grandeur falls for the promises of an egomaniacal record mogul. When the legendary music producer Swan shows an interest in Winslow Leach’s compositions, the musician is hooked. But what begins like a classic show-business satire quickly turns into a modern recreation of the classic »Faust«-saga – even though no Mephistopheles is needed. Because those who see the devil in Paul Williams’ Swan have completely overestimated this flamboyant, but rather mundane scoundrel.

In the end, the producer and the musician are more alike than we really want to admit – due to Brian De Palma’s genius. In a world that has anointed fame and money the two remaining goddesses, even Mephistopheles has lost his place. The deal with the devil turns into a capitalistic chain letter: everybody sells his soul – and nobody feels bad about it.
