Set in the late 50s in LA, the true story of Richard Stephen Valenzuela, known as Ritchie Valens, stars Lou Diamond Phillips in his iconic breakout role. Raised in poverty, in 1957 he was still picking fruit to support his family. In 1958, the self-taught musician changed his name, and the humble 17 year-old rocketed to stardom with 3 Top Ten Records– including “La Bamba” (adapted from a Mexican folk song). Following a concert on February 2, 1959, he won a coin toss to secure a seat home on a plane with legends Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. A few minutes after midnight, it would crash. Known as the day the music died - the legends live on. Although his career lasted a mere eight months, he’s considered a pioneer of American Rock & Roll. On Rolling Stones Top 500 Songs of All Time, “La Bamba” remains the only one on the list sung in a language other than English.
