The resemblance between Russian-born chocolatier Hermann Hermann and the vagrant Felix is slight. To say the least. But still: the émigré and industrialist, played by Dirk Borgarde, is absolutely convinced to have found the perfect doppelganger in Klaus Löwitsch’s laborer – and with that the chance for a new life.Even among Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s films, truly not lacking for radical and uncompromising works, »Despair« has a very special place. On one hand, this adaptation of a novel by Vladimir Nabokov is one of his most straightforward and most focused films. On the other, it is a film that can easily induce vertigo. The camera is constantly in motion and turns every room into a kind of maze. Wherever you look there are mirrors or reflecting glass surfaces. There is nothing to hold on to. Which leads the audience to lose all orientation, just like Hermann Hermann , and therefore all sense of reality. This »Journey into the Light«, to quote the film’s tagline, is really a voyage into the madness of a single individual – and an entire nation that fell for the Nazis in the 1930s.
