Thomas Kruithof

In zeitgeist times of worldwide surveillance, the French filmmaker’s debut, the short film »Rétention« was inspired by the 1980’s Lebanon hostage crisis, wherein the dark unknown powers that negotiate human value resonate even deeper today. Hailed by critics for his craftsmanship, he emerges with a vigorous take on the crime-thriller genre.

For his film debut, Thomas Kruithof used a formula that Hitchcock and Scorsese saw as the essence of their artistic profession. Or, as the latter put it: “More than 90% of directing the picture is the right casting.” And like James Stewart was Hitchcock’s preferred choice for a regular guy stumbling into highly irregular situations, Kruithof sees the same in acclaimed French actor Francois Cluzet. He plays Duval, an unemployed, introverted bookkeeper whose fear of society is plastered across his face. Which might be the reason he is hired to transcribe intercepted phone calls for a mysterious organization. Like Gene Hackman in Francis Ford Coppola’s paranoid classic »The Conversation«, Duval falls into a plot that will throw him one fastball after the other, since he witnesses a murder that is recorded on the tapes. A breathtaking thriller which takes the audience into the paranoid mind of a desperate man – and allows us a glimpse into an inhuman system. All that and a brilliant turn by Cluzet in a role tailored perfectly to his immense talent.
