A, a young philosophy student, has some pretty strong opinions. He cannot accept the capitalist system that his parents profit from. The inequality it produces and the exploitation it sustains will have to end. This is why he joined a radical student group. But even their actions don’t go far enough, at least in his opinion.Right at the beginning of Paul Williams’ brilliant Adaptation of Hans Koningsberger’s novel of the same name, A – brilliantly played by Jon Voight – tumbles down a flight of stairs. His comrades are of course convinced that policeman must have attacked and pushed him. But, in reality, it was just a coincidence, an accident that could have happened to anybody. But there is something deeply symbolic in this misstep. One false move – and everything gets out of control. »The Revolutionary« is undoubtedly a lost milestone of the New Hollywood – one that deserves to be brought back out into the open. Paul Williams does not only chronicle a nearly accidental radicalization with great precision. He also paints a frightful portrait of the totalitarian undercurrents within the western world that today seems more current that eve.
