Stephen Burke

The Novelist and filmmaker started his career in film making award-winning shorts about the conflict in Northern Ireland. His 2009 feature debut “ Happy Ever Afters” starred Oscar nominee, Sally Hawkins. Having worked in TV, with his 2nd film he returns his roots in this gripping true-life thriller. Next up is the Publication of his novel, the spy-thriller “The Reluctant Contact”.

Based on the true story of the 1983 mass breakout of 38 prisoners from Maze High Security Prison during the Northern Ireland Conflict, writer-directed Burke delivers a brilliant gripping prison break film that follows the relationship between two men on opposite sides of the prison bars. After a hunger strike that left 10 of his fellow IRA prisoners dead before being called off, Larry remains devoted to his cause. And determined not to remain silenced, he slowly befriends his unsuspecting Warden, Gordon, with cautious, chess-like moves. Initially, Gordon holds all the cards and power in their relationship, rejecting all Larry’s attempts at establishing ease between them. Bit by bit, however, Larry wears down his Warden’s defenses, and maneuvers himself into a position of trust. As each man begins to engage with the other as an equal, the barrier between prisoner and warder is broken, and their relationship represents the beginning of dialogue between the two sides - the first green shoots of the eventual peace process. But equally imprisoned, Gordon is stunned and betrayed when Larry’s two years of planning an escape make
headlines around the world.
