Based on Yves Theriault's best-selling novel “Agaguk”, set in the mid-1930s in the Canadian Arctic North, a dangerous new animal is on the prowl threatening to disrupt the peaceful and isolated society of an Inuit tribe. The young rebellious Agaguk (Lou Diamond Phillips), and his tribal chief father, Kroomak (Toshiro Mifune “ Seven Samurai”, “Rashomon”), clash over the growing presence of the white men in their territories. Kroomak is determined to open up the fur trade as well as take Agaguk’s love interest Igiyook (Jennifer Tilly) as his concubine. In a struggle with a trader who buys bearskins for booze, the hotheaded Agaguk kills the white man and is shunned from the tribe and disowned by his father. Fleeing into the forbidding winter wilderness, with lawman Henderson (Donald Sutherland) on his tail, Agaguk bravely faces his destiny. And the fate of his people lay in the hands and the heart of the hero. For directing duo Dorfmann (producer “Quest for Fire”) and Magny, it is a labor of love - and the crisp cinematography of Oscar winner Billy Williams (“Ghandi”) captivate the beautiful, chilling, and relentless world of the great white north.
