Michael Showalter

Princeton born, the New Jersey director, writer and actor graduated from Brown University. His second directorial endeavor “Hello, My Name Is Doris” starring two-time Academy Award-winner Sally Field garnered the Audience Award at SXSW. “The Big Sick” won Audience Awards at SXSW and Locarno.

Sometime life writes the best stories - and »The Big Sick« is one of them. Produced by Judd Apatow (“The 40-Year-Old Virgin”, “Knocked Up”), director Michael Showalter‘s stranger than fiction romantic comedy rewards us with authenticity, charm, and an abundance of laughs. American comedian Kumail Nanjiani (“Silicon Valley”) stars alongside Zoe Kazan in the truelife tale of his relationship with wife and co-screenwriter Emily Gordon. Struggling on the stand-up comedy scene in Chicago, Kumail, a Pakistani immigrant, falls madly in love with Emily, a free flying grad student. However, their relationship encounters a major bump as his tradition conscious culture brings an end to their joyride. But when Emily contracts a grave illness that puts her in a coma, Kumail must face the ultimate challenge - face her feisty parents (played by Oscar winner Holly Hunter and beloved Ray Romano), his own family’s expectations and - above all - his true feelings. “The Big Sick” sets out to prove that the idea of cross-cultural relationships is still controversial, while marvellously mixing the warm spirit of a love story with genuine
dark comedy moments.
