The Oldenburg Film Festival has made its name as one of the Top 5 film festivals worldwide in Chris Gore’s esteemed Film Festival Guide. It will remain one of the leading hubs for innovative and independent filmmaking. All those who want their films considered for entry can submit material until June 22nd 2011. The entry fee and the final decision about entry consideration is decided by the posting date of the DVD screener and the entry form. All forms can be downloaded from the festival’s website. Films can also be submitted via Withoutabox. The best international independent film and the best German film will receive the prestigious German Independence Awards. The best short film is also honored with an own award.

Actress Liv Lisa Fries, who presented the film “She Deserved It” in 2010 at Oldenburg with star Oliver Mommsen, director Thomas Stiller and producer Gesa Tönnesen, has been awarded with the Günter-Strack-Television Award for excellence in acting by Studio Hamburg. Her presentation of a complex character and her convincing emotionality were mentioned especially by the jury. Liv Lisa Fries took on the role of a young girl who tortures a classmate to death because of jealousy. The production went on to Soho International Film Festival, New York and the German Gems Film Festival in San Francisco after its screening in Oldenburg and will be aired on national TV on September 14th by ARD.

Revenge thriller “Takedown” claimed several awards at the Leo Awards, the Canadian film award in British Columbia. Raul Inglis received best directing honors and Richard Martin was awarded for his editing. The film was presented as the festival’s centerpiece gala film by Inglis, star and jury president of the German Independence Award Deborah Kara Unger and producer Matt Kelly in Oldenburg in 2010. It has since been released on DVD.

Some quick news about new releases:

The festival’s cooperation with online-film-library MUBI is being taken one step further. Some previous festival films have now been made available. Among them are the astonishing “Love” by Vladan Nikolic (, “The Fountain” by Darren Aronofsky (closing film in 2006) and “The Pleasure of Being Robbed” by Joshua Safdie.

Furthermore, MUBI’s  catalogue includes classics and international indies by renown directors such as the Coen brothers, Kitano, Almodóvar, Tarantino or Gus Van Sant. But MUBI offers more than films, festivals or exciting retrospectives. They see themselves as a social network for international film fans. The festival page can be found here:

Independent Partners releases the stunning and intimate documentary “Nina – Diary of a Porn Star”. In this film Thibault Staib follows the French porn star Nina Roberts during the time of her decision to quit the business. He tries to understand what made her become a porn star and why she doesn’t use her bad experiences to keep other girls from falling into the same trap. The documentary sheds light on the machinations of a billion dollar industry and contrasts the vast empire of porn with a single dissenting voice, which is lovingly captured. The DVD can be purchased through or through regular retailers.

Festival director Torsten Neumann and curator RP Kahl teamed up to produce the film “Bedways” which will be released on June 21st on DVD in the USA. It is distributed by Strand Releasing. The film has also been released on DVD and Blu-ray in Germany and on DVD in the UK. Further territories are currently added by Jinga Films.
