German Independence Award - Jury 2011

The German Independence Award - Best German Film was established in 2004 to celebrate independent, young German cinema at the Oldenburg Filmfestival. It is awarded by an international jury and all nominated films are shown with English subtitles.



Matthew Modine has worked with many of the film industry s most respected directors, such as Oliver Stone, Robert Altman, and Stanley Kubrick, and starred in such films as FULL METAL JACKET and BIRDY. He is the recipient of a Golden Globe Award, the Venice Film Festival Volpi Cup, and a Golden Lion. As a director, his acclaimed short films have played at distinguished film festivals worldwide. In Oldenburg he will present his new short JESUS WAS A COMMIE.

The American director, producer, writer and distributor Radley Metzger is regarded as the representative for erotic auteur cinema, revolutionizing the mainstream in the 70s with his mixture of creative ambition and exploitation. Before turning to full time direction he established the distribution company Audubon Films in the 1960s. Among others, his directorial works “Therese and Isabelle” and “The Lickerish Quartet” are considered as masterpieces of erotic cinema. In 2010 Metzger was honored with a retrospective of his work at the Oldenburg International Film Festival. This year he was given a week long retrospective of his films by the UCLA Film School at the Billy Wilder Theater in L.A.

 

 


Heading up the film sales company Altadena Films, Ildi Toth Davy has acquired and licensed THE RIDDLE, THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, SEHNSUCHT, and TRAVELLERS. Prior to running Altenda Films, she served as Head of Sales for Curb Entertainment and Director at Overseas Filmgroup/First Look International. Ildi began her career at Carolco as Sales Assistant for FIRST BLOOD, which will be presented in Oldenburg as part of the retrospective.

 

 

 

 


Born in Seoul Soopum Sohn is a film director, writer, and cinematographer. His directorial feature debut MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME premiered at Pusan International Film Festival in 2008 and was most recently invited to screen as part of ContemporAsian season at MoMA. As cinematographer, his films include MITCHELLVILLE, SA-KWA, and Happy New Year. Soopum holds MFAs for Cinematography and Directing. He is an Associate Professor of Film at Long Island University.

 

 

 

 
After more than ten years in the cinema and photography business, Matteo Lovadina founded his own international distribution and production company, REEL SUSPECTS, which specializes in European art house feature films, with an attentive eye on newcomers, extending over new technologies and competitive strategies to find new audiences and networks. He represents internationally 22ND OF MAY and THE ORPHAN GIRL WITHOUT AN ARM, presented at this year’s festival.
